Prevention - 3 ways of prevention
- Vaccine
- Live attenuated varicella (Oka) vaccine
- (>1 yr upto age 12) who have not been previously vaccinated; 2 Doses: 12-15mth, 4-6 yr
- >13 yr who are seronegative; 2 doses ; 1 month apart
- VZ Vaccine
- > 50 yrs age
- Has 18 times the viral content of Oka vaccine
- Decreases shingles by 51%, burden of illness by 61%, incidence of post-herpetic neuralgia by 666%
- VZIG (Varicella Zoster Immunoglobulin)
- Within 96 hr of exposure (best if given <72 hr)
- Prophylactic antiviral therapy
- who are not eligible for vaccines or >96 hr of exposure. Can be given as much as 7 days after the intense exposure. Minimizes the severity of the disease manifestation
